While shoe shopping yesterday, I encountered a sales associate that very much wanted to tell me all about the trends for Fall 2010. In a show with such an astounding number of beautiful handbags, I barely know where to begin. Who would have thought after last season’s tribal tassel disaster that Marc Jacobs would come up with such a feminine, pretty, and functional collection of handbags at Louis Vuitton. I would have been the last one to guess it – in fact, I remarked to a friend last week that I was barely even looking forward to the Vuitton show. But that’s the genius of Marc Jacobs. It was a beautiful collection, made only more beautiful by the gobs and gobs of gloriously detailed, traditionally wrought handbags in every material that one could imagine: crocodile, ostrich, leather, fur, lace, satin, beads, you name it. Almost all of the bags were plays on the traditional Speedy shape, with a few wristlets thrown in for good measure. When you see a petite quilted flap bag with a chain strap that is intertwined with the same material as the bag itself, it’s difficult not to think only of Chanel. I mean, really, almost all luggage you see is black and that truly is the same when it comes to laptop bags. I know that more than anything else, we look for functionality, but every now and again a little bit of color can’t do any harm. When I cam across the Burberry Laptop Messenger Bag, I thought, now *this* is something I’d like to carry around. I know the Burberry pattern can be a little much at time, but in the instance, I think it works wonderfully. The bag comes with brasstone hardware on the case along with a canvas shoulder strap and the flap has a double snap closure. And as always, I enjoy the interior slip, zip and cell phone pockets. I’m not entirely sure that that’s what I was supposed to think of, and maybe it’s just indicative of my proximity to those that are, in fact, packin’ heat, but that’s what I thought of. And if that’s the picture that the folks at Burberry were trying to paint, then they did a pretty good job. Unlike the soft, ruffly Burberry tote that we featured a few days ago, the patent leather of this bag makes the rows neat and stuff, giving it the appearance of rows and rows of Rambo-like bullet straps. The handles, attachments, and optional shoulder strap are all in smooth leather of the same color, with juxtaposes nicely with the all-over pleating. I think it was wise to do the patent incarnation in a more structured shape than the soft leather, because patent is inherently more structured, and matching appropriate material with appropriate bag structure is one of the most important things a bag designer can do. I don’t like it as much as the soft leather hobo, but that’s just my personal taste – I’m still impressed with Burberry’s bags for this season.

The house of Gucci has only had me cringing the past few seasons. It is unfortunate to walk by a luxury store and literally walk as far away as possible. Then, when I feel a little bad, I go into the store and peer around. But the end result is the same, I am bored and ultimately not drawn to anything. Even a few weeks ago when we were in NYC there was a celeb in Gucci. We were allowed in to look around (more like look to see who was there), yet it was so painful to be in the store that we left and could not have done so quick enough. But their cruise ’08 line has a handful of bags that I actually am liking, well so far they are ok. The shape on the Gucci Pop Bamboo Handle Bag works great if you need to lug a large amount of goods around and offers a removable shoulder strap for ease of use. Like the name says, there is a bamboo handle top, which makes this bag great for cruise collections but not easy to wear year around (unless you live in the tropics). Gucci is banking on this shape being a hit, hence they have designed three versions of this bag for everyone to choose from. Luxury Handbags To say that I was critical of the last Burberry Prorsum handbag collection might actually be an understatement; I didn’t like the bags at all, and based on your reactions to our review, I wasn’t alone. Well, it looks as though Christopher Bailey’s accessories crew may have righted the ship in time for Burberry Prorsum Fall 2011 handbags – along with the collection’s splendid outwear, most of the handbags that hit the runway were intensely covetable. I still don’t understand why Burberry insists on using its novacheck logo fabric on runway bags instead of relegating it to the regular line as most brands tend to do, but thankfully most of the tasseled satchels and smart, structured clutches were all leather. Burberry showed quite a bit of what appeared to be embossed crocodile as well, giving a collection full of texture yet another layer of visual interest. I would be happy to have every single structured clutch and all of the non-logo satchels from this show in my closet immediately.

At first I wondered if the price was correct, but it hasn’t changed in the couple of weeks that the bag has been on the Saks website, so it must be correct. I doubt this is the brand’s response to the recession – Prada doesn’t seem like the type of brand that intends to acknowledge it at all – but for whatever reason they chose to produce the reasonably priced Prada Vitello Shine Hobo, and I’m pretty pleased with it. Odds are that the gorgeous purple color is making me more enthusiastic than I would be otherwise (it reminds me of my favorite Balenciaga color of all time, 2007 violet), but color is such an important part of a bag’s personality that I’m completely okay with that. Prada always uses excellent leathers and high-quality construction, so I don’t doubt that the bag will last for quite a long time indeed. The only thing left to consider is the structure: it’s boring, I’ll admit, but it’s also highly functional, and the beautiful shade of purple makes up for the simple shape. This week we will be bringing you a variety of bags that make perfect Valentine’s Day presents. And just in time for this Hallmark Holiday, Burberry has been releasing a line of heart print bags. The line of bags ranges from totes to small shoulder bags. There is still the quintessential nova check pattern that can be seen on each item. The hearts then take over the foreground of each item, which gives us a splash of love. The PurseBlog team will be taking tomorrow off to spend Thanksgiving with our families, so barring any purse-related breaking news, y’all are on your own Turkey Day. It seems to me, though, that our separate celebrations shouldn’t mean that we can’t share with each other about the things that make us thankful. I’m talking, of course, about handbag things. Most of us probably have to come up with a serious list before we’re rationed our part of the turkey, but since I don’t have any giant roasted poultry to give out, feel free to give me a slightly more fashionable version of that list. To print or not to print, that is the question. With the Gucci Spring ’06 Cruise Line being released we see the use of patterns and prints to take over and give off some tropical flair. While I love the shape of this bag, I don’t find it very practical. Gucci wants to welcome spring with the Gucci Spring ’06 Medium Shoulder Bag. The tropical print you find of this Gucci bag is labeled the pigna print which looks like pineapples and bananas, but in a sort of abstract art. Yes, my description is lacking a bit, but nevertheless you understand what I mean (and if not you can see what I mean through the picture). The shape of this bag lured me in when I was recently in the Gucci store. Brown leather trim and braided handles set the patterned body off nicely along with goldtone hardware. If you are one of the ladies, much like my mom, who likes a bag to hang comfortably on the shoulder and not “ride up”, then this bag will suit you well. Measuring 13″H X 17″L X 4 ¾”W, this bag is cute for spring but to me isn’t completely practical. One of the biggest developments in handbag trends over the past few seasons has been the return of the reasonably sized handbag, called the “lady-scale” bag by some, in reference to the refined women who once carries purses of a similar size. Marc Jacobs was a major producer of giant, shoulder-aching handbags back when they were having their moment in the sun, but now that the entire spectrum of possible sizes is available retail, he’s downsized a bit with the Marc Jacobs Baroque Ingrid and the slightly more petite Marc Jacobs Baroque Faye. Marc Jacobs is known for interspersing his relatively staid accessories line with a little dose of crazy every season, but usually I can at least find the good-natured humor in his aesthetic wanderings. When you see a petite quilted flap bag with a chain strap that is intertwined with the same material as the bag itself, it’s difficult not to think only of Chanel. The Prada Printed Chain Shoulder Bag didn’t immediately cause that association in my head, though. Rather, my first thought was, “Ooh, nice print.” Whether or not you like this bag probably hinges largely on whether or not you like Prada’s famous patterns, which are always sharp and interesting, as opposed to girly or traditionally pretty. In a very pointed reminder that, yes, there are still people out there with plenty of cash to spend on handbags, luxury giant Hermes has decided to open a temporary outpost on Easthampton to cater to the elite that can still afford the kind of house that gives them the ability to use “summer” as a verb. Well, if this CraigsList ad for temporary sales associates is to be believed, anyway. Women’s Wear Daily seems to confirm it, although I’m cheap and don’t have a subscription, so I can’t see the entire article. What does this tell us? Well, it tells us that the Hamptons are still a little annoying, in a Real Housewives of New York, fabulously awful way. It also tells us that there’s hope for our economy yet – keep spending, obscenely rich people! And keep going on vacation! Hermes wants to give you a way to do both, simultaneously, and if that isn’t the American way, then I don’t know what is. Replica Gucci Handbags Sometimes, the little things count. A handbag, after all, is a utilitarian creation made beautiful because of its utter necessity – a bag that was difficult to carry would be useless to most women. As such, there are only so many design alteration that you can make to a bag, and I often think that making a beautiful bag with minimal design innovations is much more difficult than making a bag that’s art first and useful second. Which is why I love the Prada Cervo Lux Shoulder Bag – because, at it’s heart, it’s just a purse. It’s a tote that would hold everything you need with two straps long enough to toss it over your shoulder. Its magnetic closure is easy to fasten and unfasten, and its corners and strap attachments are reinforced for durability. It’s a bag that’s meant to be used instead of gazed upon. There’s a rivet here and a chain detail there (I love the straps), but it’s almost unnerving in it’s simplicity. Prada makes some gimmicky bags, for sure, but I think it’s probably bags like this one that earn them such devoted fans.

For many, the holy grail of handbags is the Hermes Birkin, a highly coveted, highly sought after, and hard to get bag. Another reason the Birkin is so exclusive is the price. Because let’s face it, how many people actually want to spend over $7,000 (or upwards of $140,000 for a diamond encrusted Birkin) for a leather handbag? Granted you may want to, but does your significant other, bank account, etc? For most of us, no. If you are in dire need of getting your hands on a piece of Hermes, there is always the ridiculously overpriced Hermes Beach Bag. Available to order online, the Hermes Beach Bag is available in turquoise, white, yellow, or black and is strictly made of cotton. Fling it on your back and head to the beach in style. Though, I guarantee you will not feel that Hermes aura carrying this bag like you would carrying a Birkin. Again, if you are swimming in money a-la-Ducktales or you just really are some sort of over-the-top Hermes fanatic, then this bag is for you. If you rather put a nice chunk of money towards a designer leather bag that is much more practical, than join my club. So no worries mom, dad and all other super practical people in my life; I will not be buying this bag anytime soon. My SA has had me try it on before and as I have been speaking with my SA we have realized that my next purchase should be a Lindy. The Hermes Lindy has become a house favorite as it offers a more casual feel with every sophisticated touch Hermes is known for. The Lindy features a double sided compartment for ease of separation and use, along with a center that collapses in while being carried. Last week in Saks Vlad and I saw a woman wearing a casual sundress paired with a Graphite Lindy. Everything about her outfit and look was perfect, and the Lindy truly finished it off! While I meticulously pick which color is good for me, I still have a dream Lindy, my holy-grail of Lindy’s. The Hermes Crocodile Lindy is what I call 100% drool worthy. Matte crocodile from the house of Hermes is divine, as it ages it develops the perfect gloss. The Lindy above is graphite 30 Lindy in ultra-supple matte niloticus crocodile. I can not control my love of the handbag when I see it, for every part of me wants it. But the closest I will get to that bag now is in my dreams, because the price is out of my budget. So while I carefully pick my next Hermes bag purchase, I will continue to yearn for the ‘too-expensive-right-now’ Hermes Crocodile Lindy.
