The Prada craze over the Gaufre is well deserved. I wrote about the Gucci Sukey Large Tote a few months ago, and when I saw it available for pre-order in a new trim color on Saks.com today, I thought it might be worth revisiting. Because, to be honest, the climate for logo bags has changed, as has the climate for anything obviously expensive, since the first incarnation of this bag came out. Since then, the US (and much of the world) economy has imploded, millions are out of jobs, and many have seen their retirements shrink to nearly nothing. So…why in the world do I still like this bag? Because I do. A lot. Even though I hate logo bags in general, and have for quite some time, I still have a small place in my heart for Gucci’s signature fabric. And I still think this bag is well-designed, despite the logos. The lines are simple, it’s functional, but it still has a bit of subtle chicness to it. Plus it’s a bag from a major designer for under a grand. Not too bad, even if it’s not really a recession must-have. As Megs mentioned I am currently in LA and I have to say, it is wonderful out here. The first time that I scrolled past the Prada Tessuto & Ricamo Tote, I was entirely sure that it was Valentino. Partly that’s because of the difficulty of photographing the details of a bag like this, but partly (or maybe mostly), it’s because it really LOOKS like some of the Valentino bags we’ve seen recently. Incredibly intricate, shiny, flower-themed…that’s kind of their thing. And it’s really not Prada‘s thing – their aesthetic is much more streamlined and modern, particularly in the bag department. And the more I look at it, the clearer it becomes that Miuccia should have left this to her Italian compatriots. The sequins-and-nylon setup they’ve got going on here just isn’t working, not even a little. Valentino does a great job with this gimmick because there is order in the bags’ chaos; the Prada version just looks like someone dumped a bag of black sequins on it. This trip in New York has been filled with the most stunning weather and the most Prada bags I have seen in a long time. I have been utterly shocked at seeing bag after bag of Prada. Today I saw a bag that again made me fall in love. While we were at a fashion show in a spacious and jaw-dropping loft overlooking the Hudson River there she was, the Prada Stripes Hobo in black. It’s well-documented that dark silver or pewter is my favorite of all the metallics and probably my favorite neutral, and this is a great example. When you’re a major bag fan, you start to pic up on the subtle idiosyncrasies of major designers – the way that they attach handles, the types and colors of hardware that they tend to use, the shape of their corners and finish of their leathers. When I saw it without any name attached, I thought that perhaps it was Oscar de la Renta or maybe even one of Lanvin’s more streamlined pieces, but it’s not. Instead, the bag is from Marc Jacobs, the reality of which still surprises me. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But despite the fact that I’ve never been a big fan of bags with branding all over them, I’ve always had a soft spot for Gucci. I think it works because even if it didn’t serve as a logo, it would still be a fairly simple and attractive pattern. And that’s why I like the Gucci New Jackie Guccissima Shoulder Bag. Last season when the New Jackie came out, I wrote about how much I like the functional and comfortable shape of the bag, and that hasn’t changed a bit. When you combine super soft, matte leather with the Guccissima embossed logo, it provides great texture without having to mess with the bag’s structure or premise. The color of this bag seals the deal for me – grey is an enormous, important color for Fall 2009, and this grey is a perfect, blue-undertoned, medium grey that will go with almost anything in the average woman’s wardrobe. These bags only make up part of what is always an enormous accessories collection, but it seems as though Jacobs is right on board with the multicolor trend that has emerged quickly in Europe, as well as the continuing trend for smaller, more streamlined and structured bags. This is perhaps the most wearable collection of runway bags Jacobs has presented in a few seasons, and they’ll almost certainly do well at retail.

I’m so split on Prada‘s Fall 2009 collection. I’ve seen some bags from it that look great – a bit boring, but made of nice materials and stylish enough to appeal to a lot of people. And then I’ve seen some bags that are apparently slightly more ‘conceptual,’ and most of those don’t work as well. A new entry on that list is the Prada Velluto Jacquard Tote. It looks like what Prada was going for here was a modern-day carpet bag, this time made of nylon and velvet instead of more old-fashioned materials. I guess they partially succeeded, since it’s possible to see their goal in the finished product, but it’s hard to look at pictures of the bag and go, “Yes, exactly, this is exactly what a modern carpet bag should be.” The pattern looks vaguely like a cult logo, and I’m not paying $1500 for mustard-colored nylon that labels me as part of the Dharma Initiative. The horsebit detail, a house staple, is an aspect that I have adored from Gucci and love that it is incorporated for this handbag. On the inside there are zip and cell phone pockets and the dimensions are large, 18¼”W X 14½”H X 4½”D. Now what I really love is that I can see this being the black bag for so many of us. If we are up to date with our fall fashion, like we should be, we all know that shearling is ‘in’. I mean waaay in style. But just because you are a high end designer with a well-known name, it doesn’t mean that each of your bags will be a hit even if they implement the looks of the season. The Gucci Large Shearling Tote simply does not do it for me. Granted I have not yet seen this bag in person, but from the looks of it the bag does not look beige- rather the color you would see when you open up a baby’s diaper. The entire tote is monogrammed with the Gucci GG logo on the beige shearling and is trimmed in beige leather. This tote is also a pretty nice size: 10 3/4″H x 13 3/4″W x 5 3/4″D, but I’d still really rather pass. Hermes Replica I’m not a big makeup girl. Ladies, I have to tell you, I had a great weekend. I was lucky enough to get to meet about a dozen of our wonderful Atlanta-area (and beyond!) When you see a petite quilted flap bag with a chain strap that is intertwined with the same material as the bag itself, it’s difficult not to think only of Chanel. The Prada Printed Chain Shoulder Bag didn’t immediately cause that association in my head, though. Rather, my first thought was, “Ooh, nice print.” Whether or not you like this bag probably hinges largely on whether or not you like Prada’s famous patterns, which are always sharp and interesting, as opposed to girly or traditionally pretty. I love them, no matter how difficult they may make it to fit a bag like this into a wardrobe. During warmer months, I think I could make it happen, though.
